Title: A functional molecular marker approach to improve 'balanced algal productivity' - the case of Chlorella vulgaris
Co-authors: Luz Muñoz and Hélio Costa (UFC, Brasil)
Animal feed certification instrument and procedure to guarantee the quality of meat and dairy products through automatic, simple and rapid DNA barcode method based on tubulin-based polymorphism (TBP).
Three members of the Chair will participate in the international Consortium. The principal coordinator is Diego Breviario from Italy (IBBA-CNR Milan).
Hélia Cardoso will coordinate our part at the UÉ and presented it in Brussels during negotiation. Diego Breviario was invited once as speaker to the AOX Symposium in 2008, is co-author of an article with first authorship of Alexandre Ferreira (Ferreira et al. 2009). Alexandre established the TBP methodology at the Chair for comparison with our main gene candidate marker AOX. Thus, Alexandre Ferreira was through his activities the main driver in our group for this new development in applied plant science. The group will enter by this project in contact with several international companies from several countries. AOX will be used as a standard marker reference. Birgit Arnholdt-Schmitt is the third member in the project.
Dr. Jan T. Svensson was recruited as Marie Curie Fellow at the Chair within the frame of the 'Industry - Academia Partnership and Pathway (IAPP)' project since April 2012. Jan Svensson is expert in Bioinformatics and Plant Genetics. He has vast experience with mobility for science in diverse countries and institutions. Among this he worked in a plant breeding project during 5 years in a large Barley Research Consortium group at the University of California, Riverside, USA. The scientist has interest to stay for a longer time at the Competence Focus 'AOX Research and Functional Marker Development' developed and coordinated at the EU Marie Curie Chair/ICAAM and help profiling the institution.

The project will study AOX gene diversity in AMF and will link a SME from Germany to the Chair at the University of Évora. Both partners will frequently exchange scientists/members of the units to learn from each other and develop the project together. The project will start in December 2010 and will run for 4 years.
The Chair holder was invited by the Joint Genomics Centre in Sofia, Bulgaria (http://www.jgc-bg.org/site/index.php?lang=en ), to present the research developed at the EU Marie Curie Chair. An official agreement for future collaboration has been initiated.
The coordination activities of the EU Marie Curie Chair were recognized by the University of Évora through upgrading the award of the Chair holder to the highest degree as Coordinating Investigator
